Preventive effect of Total ethanolic extract of Butea monosperma on bone loss in osteopenic rats

Aim: The intent of the study was to assess bone conserving effect Butea monosperma total extract (BTE) prepared from stem-bark, in ovariectomy (Ovx)-induced loss Sprague Dawley (SD) rats.
 Methods: Sprague-Dawley rats were ovariectomized (Ovx) and BTE treatment with three different doses (100mg, 250mg 500mg/kg body weight) commenced a day after Ovx continued for 12 weeks. Skeletal parameters including trabecular cortical microarchitecture, mineral density, content, biomechanical strength, turnover markers (serum procollagen 1 N-terminal propeptide/ P1NP cross-linked C-telopeptide type I collagen/CTX-1), new formation rate (periosteal apposition rate), expression osteogenic genes assessed. Estrogenicity assessed by studying uterus at end treatments.
 Results: treated prevented alterations maintained increased strength comparison rats. Treatment also enhanced rate, serum marker (P1NP), decreased resorption (CTX-1), upregulated bones. devoid estrogen-like uterus.
 Conclusion: protects against Ovx-induced inhibiting increasing formation. most effective dose 250mg/kg. This demonstrates potential preventing/delaying osteoporosis development postmenopausal women.
